Who Can Apply for a Vietnam E-Visa

Citizens of every country and territory can apply for an evisa for Vietnam. The old list of 80 eligible countries no longer applies.

Before you apply, check whether you need a visa at all:

  • Visa-exempt travelers: citizens of 38 countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan and South Korea, can enter visa-free for a set number of days.
  • Longer stays: if your trip is longer than your exemption allows, you still need an e-visa.
  • Not exempt: travelers from the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and India need a visa for every trip.

Details are in Vietnam Visa Exemption and Vietnam E-Visa Eligible Countries.

Documents to Prepare Before Apply

Have these ready before you start. With everything to hand, the form takes only a few minutes:

  • A passport valid for at least six months from your entry date;
  • A clear scan of your passport photo page, with all four corners and both code lines visible;
  • A recent portrait photo, 4×6 cm, white background, no glasses;
  • Entry and exit dates and the border gate where you will enter;
  • Address in Vietnam, such as your first hotel.

From our desk: photo problems and names that do not exactly match the passport are the most common reasons an application is sent back.

The full rules are in Vietnam Visa Photo Guidelines and Vietnam Visa & Entry Requirements.

Choosing Between Single and Multiple Entry

Both types are valid for up to 90 days, so the choice depends only on your route.

  • Single entry allows one entry into Vietnam. Once you leave, the e-visa can no longer be used, even if days remain. It suits trips where you arrive once and leave once, such as a two-week holiday.
  • Multiple entry allows unlimited entries within the validity period. It suits itineraries that include a side trip to Cambodia, Laos or Thailand, or long stays with short breaks abroad.

Tip: an issued e-visa cannot be changed from single to multiple entry. If there is any chance you will leave and come back, choose multiple entry from the start.

A few points help you pick the right option:

  • Count working days in Vietnam time (GMT+7). The Immigration Department does not process applications on weekends or public holidays, except through the weekend emergency service.
  • Plan around holidays. Tet Holiday, 30 April to 1 May and 2 September all slow standard processing.
  • Flying within a day? Use an emergency option: Vietnam Emergency Visa Application

Common Reasons E-Visa Applications Are Rejected

Most e-visa problems are caused by a handful of avoidable errors. Our specialists check for each of them before your application is submitted:

  • Photo issues: shadows, glasses, a coloured background or a tightly cropped head.
  • Unreadable passport scans: glare or a cut-off edge that hides the two code lines at the bottom of the page.
  • Details that do not match: a missing middle name, reversed names or a mistyped passport number.
  • Short passport validity: less than six months remaining from your entry date.
  • Wrong entry gate: a border gate that does not match your ticket or is not on the e-visa list.
  • Duplicate applications: a second application for the same trip, often submitted because the first seemed slow.

What to Do After Receive E-Visa

Your approved e-visa arrives by email as a PDF. Before you travel, take a few minutes to make sure everything is in order:

  1. Check every detail against your passport: name, date of birth, passport number, validity dates and entry gate.
  2. Print a copy and keep the PDF offline on your phone. Airlines and immigration may ask for either.
  3. Complete the PAI pre-arrival declaration within 72 hours of landing if you arrive at an airport that uses [Vietnam PAI Pre-Arrival Declaration].
  4. Enter through the gate on your e-visa, on or after the start date.
